Geomagnetic Navigation: A Potential Alternative to Beidou and GPS

Últimas noticias de la empresa sobre Geomagnetic Navigation: A Potential Alternative to Beidou and GPS
Preface

Geomagnetic navigation is a passive autonomous navigation technology. It treats the Earth’s magnetic field as a natural coordinate system and determines positions for aircraft, vessels and submarines by measuring geomagnetic signals. Unlike satellite navigation, it does not rely on external infrastructure. Different from inertial navigation, it has no accumulated error. Thanks to its strong anti-interference capability and survivability, geomagnetic navigation has become a popular navigation technology and is nicknamed “Mother Earth’s golden finger".

China has successfully developed Beidou, which delivers competitive performance versus GPS. Meanwhile, the United States is researching geomagnetic navigation. It is worth discussing whether geomagnetic navigation could outperform Beidou and GPS in the future.

US Air Force Explores Geomagnetic Navigation as GPS Alternative

The US Air Force has made progress in geomagnetic navigation. Joint research conducted by the US Air Force and MIT shows that geomagnetic navigation can reach positioning accuracy of 10 meters, slightly worse than GPS’s 3-meter precision.

With rapid development of anti-satellite and electromagnetic jamming technologies, the vulnerability of satellite navigation systems has become obvious. Therefore, the US military is accelerating research on alternative navigation solutions. The US Air Force launched geomagnetic navigation research and signed contracts with MIT for the AI Accelerator Program to advance geomagnetic navigation and other cutting-edge technologies.

Geomagnetic navigation determines locations according to regional differences in magnetic field intensity. Similar to undulating terrain, magnetic field strength varies across the Earth’s surface. Researchers deploy magnetometers to collect magnetic data and build magnetic anomaly maps, which serve as the foundation for geomagnetic matching navigation.

Geomagnetic navigation has two major advantages compared with conventional navigation systems.

  1. Strong anti-interference capability. It is nearly impossible to disturb the global geomagnetic field. Only nuclear explosions may trigger geomagnetic fluctuations. Conventional jammers cannot effectively interfere with the Earth’s magnetic field, and AI algorithms can further suppress interference effects.
  2. Easy deployment. Magnetometers measure ambient magnetic field without time or environmental constraints. In contrast, satellite navigation depends on space and ground infrastructure plus communication links. Other backup navigation tools also have limitations: terrain matching fails over oceans, while star trackers and visual navigation are sensitive to weather and lighting.
Summary

After years of slow development, geomagnetic navigation has become a hot research topic driven by advances in geodesy and geophysics. Navigation schemes based on gravity and geomagnetic measurement attract growing attention.

Satellite navigation promotes the development of alternative navigation technologies. Although satellite navigation features fast response, real-time output, high precision and all-weather operation, it has inherent weaknesses including weak anti-jamming performance, limited confidentiality and reliability. Satellite signals are unavailable in polar regions, deep mountains, underground spaces and underwater environments. In wartime, damaged satellites are hard to repair quickly, which would disable many precision weapons relying on satellite positioning.

For this reason, major countries are developing satellite-independent navigation technologies using optical, electromagnetic, magnetic and gravity signals. Geomagnetic navigation, with good concealment, low cost, strong anti-interference and moderate precision, has become a promising navigation solution.

Deeper geodesy and geophysical research, new high-precision magnetic sensors and artificial intelligence help solve technical challenges for geomagnetic navigation. Rising positioning demands from manned and unmanned underwater vehicles, underground and indoor environments also bring new opportunities.

Experiments demonstrate that smartphone magnetometers combined with cloud-based magnetic maps can theoretically achieve meter-level positioning for underground mines, parking garages and large buildings.

With excellent concealment and anti-interference performance, geomagnetic navigation enjoys broad military application prospects. It can operate independently or fuse with other navigation systems to improve positioning accuracy, stability and adaptability for battlefield scenarios.
