As the core light source for high-precision Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOG), Superluminescent Diodes (SLD) are often underestimated as ordinary optoelectronic components, but they directly determine the signal-to-noise ratio, long-term bias stability, and overall accuracy of the entire FOG system—a fact widely recognized by senior engineers deeply engaged in optics and inertial navigation. These experts fully understand the unique value of SLDs compared to alternative light sources; unlike ordinary laser diodes or LEDs, SLDs strike a perfect balance between high output power, ultra-broad spectral bandwidth, and low temporal coherence.

This combination of characteristics is critical for suppressing coherent backscattering and polarization noise in the fiber coil, the two main causes of drift and signal distortion in interferometric FOGs. Any performance deficiency in an SLD—whether insufficient optical power, narrow spectral width, poor wavelength stability under temperature changes, or high sensitivity to optical feedback—will directly degrade gyro performance, even when paired with top-tier fiber coils and advanced signal processing circuits.

This makes it essential to select and optimize SLDs based on the specific grade and application scenario of the FOG. Aerospace and defense-grade FOGs require hermetically packaged, radiation-hardened SLDs with strict control over wavelength temperature drift and long-term operational reliability, while industrial and tactical-grade FOGs can use cost-effective SLDs with balanced performance.

In addition, proper optical isolation and temperature stabilization for SLD modules are equally critical, as they effectively eliminate optical feedback effects and maintain consistent output. This fully proves that SLDs are not disposable peripheral components, but core fundamental parts that cannot be overlooked in building high-performance, high-reliability FOG systems for inertial navigation.
