Latest company news about What Is MEMS Gyroscope? How Does It Work?

1. Overview

A MEMS gyroscope is a compact angular velocity sensor manufactured with advanced Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) technology. It is specially designed to measure the rotation speed and rotation direction of objects. As a core inertial sensing device, it is widely used in consumer electronics, automotive systems, industrial automation, drones and aerospace equipment. Compared with traditional bulky mechanical and optical gyroscopes, MEMS gyroscopes feature tiny size, low power consumption, low cost and fast response, making them the most popular inertial rotation sensor for modern intelligent devices.

2. What is MEMS Technology

MEMS stands for Micro-Electro-Mechanical System. It is a mature micro-processing technology that carves ultra-small mechanical structures and circuit systems on semiconductor silicon wafers. All mechanical moving parts and sensing circuits are integrated on a tiny chip at the micron level. This technology completely breaks the size limit of traditional sensors, enabling mass production and wide civilian and industrial applications of high-precision sensing devices.

3. What is Coriolis Force

The core working principle of all MEMS gyroscopes relies on the Coriolis force, a common inertial force in rotational motion. Simply put, when an object moves in a straight line inside a rotating system, its moving path will shift sideways due to inertia, and this deflection effect is the Coriolis effect. A typical life example can help us easily understand this principle: when a helicopter hovers steadily in the air, it does not fly away with the Earth’s rotation. This is because the hovering aircraft is still constrained by the Earth’s gravity and always rotates synchronously with the Earth, which fully reflects the inertial correlation between linear motion and rotational motion. The magnitude of Coriolis force is directly related to the linear motion speed and rotational angular velocity of the object, which provides a stable physical basis for MEMS gyroscopes to measure rotation accurately.

4. Working Principle of MEMS Gyroscope

Built on the Coriolis effect, MEMS gyroscopes realize angular velocity measurement through a complete and stable micro-mechanical vibration system. Inside each MEMS gyro chip, there is a tiny vibrating mass block driven by micro comb electrodes. During normal operation, the mass block keeps high-frequency reciprocating vibration in a fixed direction at a stable resonant frequency. When the chip or the external device rotates, the vibrating mass block will generate a vertical Coriolis force, which pushes the mass block to produce tiny vertical displacement. The displacement degree is strictly proportional to the real-time rotation angular velocity.
The built-in high-sensitivity capacitance sensing structure of the chip can accurately capture this micro displacement and convert the mechanical change into a standard electrical signal. After amplification, filtering and algorithm processing by the internal circuit, the signal is finally calculated into accurate angular velocity data and output. Most modern MEMS gyro chips adopt dual-mass reverse vibration design. The two mass blocks vibrate in opposite directions at the same frequency, which can effectively offset environmental interference and improve measurement stability. With the continuous upgrading of MEMS technology, mainstream sensing chips can integrate 3-axis gyroscopes, 3-axis accelerometers and even magnetometers on one ultra-small chip, realizing multi-dimensional full-attitude inertial sensing.

5. Core Advantages and Application Scenarios

Benefiting from advanced micro-electromechanical integration technology, MEMS gyroscopes have irreplaceable comprehensive advantages. They are extremely small in size and easy to be embedded in various compact intelligent devices. Supported by mature batch production processes, they have low manufacturing cost and excellent consistency. With low power consumption, they are very suitable for battery-powered portable devices. In addition, they feature fast dynamic response and can capture real-time rotation changes efficiently, meeting various high-dynamic measurement needs.
Relying on the above strengths, MEMS gyroscopes have achieved full-scenario coverage. In consumer electronics, they support screen rotation, motion sensing and gesture control for smartphones and wearable devices. In the automotive industry, they assist vehicle stability control and intelligent navigation. In industrial fields, they provide accurate attitude and rotation data for intelligent robots and automated equipment. In high-end fields such as drones and aerospace, they guarantee stable attitude control and precise inertial navigation of carriers, becoming an indispensable core component of modern intelligent sensing systems.
