Inertial navigation is a fully autonomous navigation technology. It operates independently without relying on external signals, features strong anti-interference capability, and supports all-weather and all-time operation, making it widely used in industrial, civilian and military fields. As an important branch of inertial navigation technology, MEMS inertial navigation adopts micro-electro-mechanical inertial sensors, featuring small volume, light weight, low power consumption, low cost and high impact resistance. It has become the core navigation solution for autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ships and various miniature intelligent carrier platforms.
MEMS inertial sensors are mainly composed of MEMS accelerometers and MEMS gyroscopes. Large-scale industrial application began in the automotive and defense industries in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, MEMS inertial devices were widely embedded in consumer electronic products such as smartphones. With the rapid iteration of 5G communication, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technologies, the MEMS inertial navigation industry is ushering in a new round of rapid growth and technological upgrading.
MEMS sensors are the core perception carrier and data source of new-generation intelligent information systems. Supported by the vigorous development of AI, 5G and IoT industries, the global MEMS market maintains a high growth rate. It is predicted that the total number of IoT sensors worldwide will exceed 100 trillion by 2030, bringing a huge incremental market for micro inertial sensing devices.
Consumer electronics has always been the largest application market for MEMS inertial sensors. At present, low and medium-precision MEMS inertial devices have been widely used in smartphones, game devices, motion sensors, toy-grade UAVs and smart sports equipment, occupying most of the civilian market share. With the continuous popularization of intelligent hardware and IoT terminal equipment, the market demand for miniaturized, low-cost MEMS inertial sensors will continue to increase steadily.
Gyroscopes are divided into commercial grade, tactical grade, navigation grade and strategic grade according to precision. In recent years, driven by consumer electronics and tactical weapon iteration, MEMS gyroscope technology has achieved the fastest upgrading speed among all inertial devices. Although high-end fiber optic gyroscopes and laser gyroscopes still occupy the absolute advantage in strategic-level ultra-high-precision scenarios such as aerospace and core military equipment, MEMS devices have irreplaceable comprehensive advantages in volume, weight, power consumption and cost.
In the future, with the further miniaturization, high precision and low-cost iteration of MEMS technology, high-precision MEMS gyroscopes will gradually replace traditional fiber optic gyroscopes in partial navigation-level and strategic-level scenarios, becoming the most important development trend of inertial devices.
The integrated navigation system uses satellite positioning data to calibrate inertial drift errors and suppress error divergence through Kalman filtering, complementary filtering and neural network fusion algorithms. It realizes complementary advantages: GPS provides high-precision absolute position reference in open environments, while inertial navigation provides continuous dead reckoning and attitude information in satellite signal failure scenarios such as tunnels, urban canyons and underground spaces.
At present, high-precision integrated navigation has become a rigid demand for intelligent vehicles and unmanned equipment. Inertial navigation makes up for the shortcomings of satellite navigation such as easy interference and signal loss, ensuring the continuity, stability and robustness of full-scenario navigation trajectories.
China’s MEMS inertial sensor industry started late, and there is still a certain technical gap with European, American and Japanese leading manufacturers, especially in the field of mid-to-high-end navigation and tactical-grade inertial devices. At present, most domestic high-precision application scenarios rely on imported medium and low-end industrial-grade MEMS products such as Colibrys, Sensonor and ADI devices, and the domestic substitution demand is urgent.
Therefore, focusing on the R&D and industrialization of mid-to-high-end MEMS inertial devices is the inevitable strategic choice for domestic inertial navigation enterprises to achieve technological breakthrough and market corner overtaking. In addition, emerging fields such as UAV cluster operation and VR intelligent equipment have become new blue ocean markets for multi-axis high-integration MEMS inertial devices.
With the continuous improvement of precision and stability, MEMS inertial navigation has been widely deployed in various unmanned intelligent systems, becoming the core support technology for future intelligent unmanned equipment.
Unmanned Ground Vehicles: Vehicle-mounted MEMS inertial navigation can provide continuous attitude and position output when satellite signals are blocked by buildings, ensuring the safety and stability of autonomous vehicle driving in complex urban environments.
In the future, high-precision MEMS inertial navigation will further expand to aerospace, satellite attitude control and deep space exploration fields. Relying on its autonomy, intelligence and miniaturization advantages, MEMS inertial technology will occupy a core position in the new generation of intelligent navigation systems, with extremely broad development prospects.
